Why should I get this done?
Every 80,000 kms we recommend getting your differential serviced and the fluid exchanged. The differential fluid (also known as gear oil) lubricates clutch packs, gears and bearings. It also lubricates the ring and pinion gears that move power to the wheel axles from the drive shaft as well as cool and lubricate the differential. Another benefit of a differential service is that new fluid will improve the transfer of heat in the system, which reduces oxidation. It also protects the system components from moisture build up.
The differential allows the wheels to turn at different speeds while still providing power to your vehicle. This is important when you are turning a corner as the wheels on the inside of the corner must rotate at a slower speed than the wheels on the outside.
Without differential fluid, the differential would overheat due to metal-on-metal contact. That means it would burn itself out, weaken gears, wear down surfaces and possibly cause safety issues and require expensive repairs. Since differentials don’t have a filter, when a differential experiences unwanted friction, small metal shavings or pieces may appear and cause significant damage to the differential.
